Salvador Dali

Salvador Dali, Born on May 11, 1904 to a lawyer father and a loving mother, was raised in Figueres, Catalonia, Spain. When he was old enough he was told by his parents that he was the reincarnation of his elder brother that had died five months before Dali was born. After his mother died in 1921 because of breast cancer, Dali moved to the campus of the School of Fine Arts in Madrid.

Salvador Dali, went to art school both in Madrid and Barcelona. There he learned many different artistic styles and excelled in all ways artistic. But, he didn’t actually become established as an artist until after he learned of Sigmund Freud’s transcripts on the “erotic significance of subconscious imagery”, and after he became a part of the Paris Surrealists, a group of people dedicated to showing how mind, and the subconscious, are more real than matter, our reality. To spark his subconscious mind, instead of using any of the before explained methods, frottage, grattage, and fumage, Dali used a process he described as “paranoiac critical,” or addictingly necessary (Salvador Dali).

Salvador Dali was shunned from all surrealistic groups in 1939 for supporting Francisco Franco, a Spanish Fascist, and for showing interest in what he called the “Hitler phenomenon.” He moved to the United States of America, and earned the nickname “Avida Dollars,” a anagram of his name but also a statement on his monetary usage. He gained a lot of news publicity that explained the various extravagant parties that he threw.

Throughout his years his art changed drastically. He began by using a lot of dark colors and not blending colors. Later in his life, Dali used brighter colors and created paintings that were so well made and so well blended that, even though they were unrealistic, they looked realistic.

In 1982, Gala, Dali’s wife, died. Dali, after two failed suicide attempts, died from heart failure 7 years later.
